A Village Apart, Villages Together

C. S. John Sparkes was an enthusiastic chronicler of life in Burtle and the surrounding Chilton Polden area from the seventies onwards through photography and 8mm film. His 300 plus collection of films was entrusted to us by his wife Valerie. Now, thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, we can catalogue, digitise and celebrate his work and you can help. See our volunteer opportunities for further details or pop into one of the community digitisation sessions at Café Burtle (second Saturday of each month 10am - 12pm). Subscribe to the Youtube channel to see films as they are captured. Activities will include archive film screenings and workshops for young people.

Seed

Seed is the first South West based Creative People and Places (CPP) – an Arts Council Funded initiative all about allowing more people to choose, create and take part in arts and cultural activity, and thus creates an exciting opportunity within Sedgemoor’s towns and parishes.

We believe that everybody has the right and ability to be creative, and we are here to help make that happen across Sedgemoor. Amongst their many issues you can help shape their work by volunteering as a ‘Sower and Grower’ or adding your voice through their. Creative Accelerator events.

Bridgwater Together

Bridgwater Together began life as a free one day event in October 2016. Each year it celebrates the vibrant diversity in the town through music and food, stories, dance and film from many cultures. If you would like to get involved in future events please contact us.

Follow the Facebook page to stay updated and click here to visit the event page.

We also attend ‘Together’ events across the county and plan to bring a creative contribution to Chard, Frome, Taunton, and Yeovil in 24/25

The Robert Richards Award

Sound Art Commission Opportunity for Young People in Somerset

Somerset Film, supported by Arts Council England, is inviting a young artist(s) living in Somerset to submit ideas for a new piece of digital art to be exhibited at The Engine Room.

By 'sound art' we mean an artistic work that uses sound - found sound, digitally produced sound, the voice - that is edited or produced digitally to make a final piece. It’s not simply music, though there might be a musical element to the work. It might be more experimental music, a soundscape for a game or a sound installation designed to transport the listener to a different time or location.

Ideally the work will explore a subject or theme and we are keen to hear ideas linked to Somerset or the climate crisis.

The work must be completed before March 2025 so do consider any deadlines for coursework that you may have.

The successful applicant will receive £300, a further £200 for materials and an exhibition at The Engine Room.

Submit your idea by completing our Sound Art Commission Form, apply by 1st November 2024.
