16mm Bolex Workshop with James Holcombe

This workshop will show you how to use an H16 Bolex clockwork 16mm camera, as well as strategies for shooting film in economically friendly ways.

Artist James Holcombe will deliver this workshop building on his experience of working with 16mm film equipment. Screening examples of work made by artists and filmmakers who have used the Bolex in their work, James will provide useful tips and resources for moving towards an economically viable filmmaking practice.

Finished films will be processed off site, telecined at HD quality then made available to participants.

We will cover how:
- The Bolex H16 camera is loaded and operated
- To experiment with the camera - different shooting speeds, single frame, double exposures and long exposures
- To use c-mount lenses
- To light meter using mobile phones
- To load and use cine film processing tanks
- To hand process motion picture film
- To work with motion picture film in affordable and ecologically sound ways
