16mm experimental cameraless film workshop.
This workshop will show you how to explore 16mm film to create experimental, animated films and soundtracks without a camera.
Artist James Holcombe presents a fun, accessible and intuitive workshop building for those with no experience of working with 16mm film, as well as experienced practitioners looking to broaden or experiment in their practice.
Participants will learn the basic principles of making moving images by hand. Using black & clear 16mm leader as well as found footage, you will create short individual film loops and explore a range of techniques for creating different visual effects. We will also introduce the basic principles of optical sound and how visual information can be used to create experimental soundtracks.
The workshop includes a contextual presentation of contemporary and historical works made by artists, filmmakers and animators utilising similar techniques.
Finished films will be projected as loops, then telecined at HD quality and made available to participants post the workshop.
