Somerset Film, supported by Arts Council England, is inviting a young artist(s) living in Somerset to submit ideas for a new piece of digital art to be exhibited at The Engine Room.
What is the Robert Richards Award?
The late Robert Richards was Chair and one of the founding Trustees at Somerset Film until January 2022. He was also an important figure in the story of Glastonbury Festival, working as Michael Eavis’ right-hand man for more than 30 years. He was passionate about supporting and providing a platform and opportunities for new talent. This digital commission is in memory of Robert.
Who can apply
You must live in the county of Somerset and be aged under 20 years by the application deadline date. You will need to demonstrate that you have created similar work using the digital process you propose using. You do not need to be studying art or other creative subject to apply. If you are aged 20 and over we encourage you to look at our Artist In Residence opportunity.
What are we looking for
By ‘digital art’ we mean any artistic work that uses digital technology (a computer / phone / tablet / digital camera / other digital device) to make or present it. This could be a poster, gif, 3D sculpture, photograph, sound installation, dance for camera work, computer game, music video etc etc. We are not seeking narrative fiction film (e.g. a drama/comedy/horror) or documentary film ideas as we have other commission strands and activity that focus on this. Poem films and other digital media ideas will be considered.
We are particularly interested in ideas that explore the current climate crisis or that reflect life in Somerset in some way.
We are looking for ideas that are achievable on the budget provided. Ideally the work will be completed by May 1st 2024 as we anticipate exhibiting or sharing the final work during May half term. However, for those studying GCSEs or A levels this can be extended to July. We know that this can be a busy time for students so are open to negotiation in regard delivery dates though it should be no later than the end of the summer holidays (August).
Unfortunately we are unable to feedback on work that is not selected.
Commission
There is only one commission available. If your idea is successful you will be awarded with £300. A further £200 is available to purchase materials, pay performers or access software to make or share the work. You can also access equipment and our Creative Technologist at The Engine Room to support the making of your work.
How to Apply
Complete an online application form, to include an outline of your idea by February 16th 2024.
